Our governor was saying the other day that the state should cut down on the cost of Medicaid help to the nursing homes by making the patients’ children take care of the cost of their parents’ care. So many of the patients in the nursing homes have single-parent children.

That is: They are already on AFDC with one or two children of their own. Some are working trying to make a living for themselves. If they were made to pay the nursing home fees that are charged for their parents’ care, plus medication, they would not even be able to pay their own rent. I know most of the elderly have Social Security but that won’t even pay for one week in the nursing home.
