Thank you for your March 18 editorial which calls on the United States government to make amends with the people of El Salvador who have suffered greatly under our government’s policies for the past 15 years. We and our government have much to be ashamed of. And we, the peace activists in Maine who have been shouting out the truth all along, have much to be angry about.

I expect two things from our congresspeople, Olympia Snowe, William Cohen, and George Mitchell, now that the truth is known to everyone about the United States’ role in the long decade of terror in El Salvador. 1) I expect them to stop tolerating lies from the State Department about our government’s doings in Central America. 2) I expect them to do everything they can to see that the peace accords in El Salvador are fully implemented. That is the hope and the right of the Salvadoran people and it is the obligation of the U.S. government. Julie Beckford Clifton
