University of Maine junior pitcher-outfielder Deb Smith was named North Atlantic Conference Player of the Week in the league’s first week.

Smith leads the Black Bears with a .443 batting average and a 2.15 ERA. Her play has helped pace Maine to its best start with a 12-8 mark. Smith (5-4) is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak and leads the team in six batting and almost all the pitching categories.
