This coming weekend’s editions of the Bangor Daily News will include an extra bonus with the publication of the 38th annual NEWS All-Maine Schoolboy Basketball Team, the state’s definitive All-State team since its inception.
The NEWS Sports Department selects the 15 top hoop stars in the schoolboy ranks with the help of ballots from most of the state’s keenest basketball observers.
The roster of past honorees is a veritable hoop Hall of Fame that includes the top talent to grace the hardwoods of the Pine Tree State starting with 1956 and Bangor’s Danny Drinon and Bath’s Big Ed Marchetti.
Since then, some of those chosen include: Tom “Skip” Chappelle, Bill Cohen, Ken Stone, Danny Coombs, John Gillette, Joe Harrington, Jon MacDonald, Jock McKernan, Steve Pound, Jim Beattie, Bob Warner, Doug Roberts, Gary Towle, Steve Smith, Matt Rossignol, Derek Counts, Dick Whitmore, Paul Butler, Raymond Alley, and many others.
The All-Maine issue of the NEWS is always a big seller, so those needing extra copies are urged to reserve or order them soon.
