Splane earns 4th All- State swimming spot

Bangor High School’s Cate Splane felt as though she was trying to swim upstream.

With every lap, every turn, and every kick toward the finish, Splane worked hard. Each time she would touch the wall, though, a glance up toward the clock left the senior swimmer wanting more.

While Splane’s senior season did not meet up to her standards, it did meet up to the standards of the state’s swim coaches who placed Splane on the 1992-93 All-State Swim Team. It was Splane’s fourth straight year as being among the state’s elite swimmers.

Splane was honored in the 400 free relay.

“It’s an honor,” Splane said. “There’s a lot of hard work with swimming and even though I’m going through some bad times I know good times are going to come. I’m happy with it as long as I keep swimming and keep enjoying it.”

Forty-three different swimmers from Kittery to Old Town were lauded in 12 different swimming events. Nine swimmers were named All-State in four events.

Those swimmers include: Nellie Fox, Mount Desert Island (200 medley relay, 100 free, 100 back, 400 free relay); Kirstin Nagle, Traip Academy (200 medley relay), 200 I.M., 100 breaststroke, 400 free relay); Guerin Anglim, Morse (50 free, 100 free, 200 free relay, 200 medley relay); Brianna Kells, Westbrook (200 medley relay, 50 free, 200 free relay, 100 breaststroke); Bernadette Sweeney (200 I.M., 100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay); Joe Brazier, South Portland (200 medley relay, 200 free, 100 backstroke, 400 free relay); Todd Libby of Cheverus (200 medley relay, 100 free, 100 breaststroke, 400 free relay); Fred Stewart, Westbrook (200 medley relay, 100 free, 100 back, 400 free relay); and Tallie Taylor (50 free, 100 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay).

Three-event All-Staters include: Trina Smith, Old Town (200 medley relay, 200 free, 200 free relay); Debbie Godsoe, Old Town (50 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay); Carolyn Tourtilotte, Boothbay (200 medley relay, 100 fly, 200 free relay); Josh Schwartz, John Bapst of Bangor (200 medley relay, 200 free, 100 fly); Todd Oldenburg, Bangor (200 medley relay, 50 free, 200 free relay); and Antti Leino, Boothbay Region (200 I.M., 100 fly, 400 free relay).

Other schoolgirl swimming honorees include MDI’s Fox, who was named Class B Swimmer of the Year; Nagle, Class A Swimmer of the Year; and Julie Snoddy and Beth Mailman, Class A and Class B Divers of the Year, respectively.

Coaches of the Year were Bill Pullis of Cape Elizabeth in Class A and Bob Hale of Greely in Class B.

For the schoolboy swimmers, David Searles of Morse was named Class A Swimmer of the Year; Libby and Jared Felker of Yarmouth tied for Class B Swimmer of the Year honors; Jordan Pike of Noble was Class A Diver of the Year; and Jaret Lizzotte of Old Town was Class B Diver of the Year.

Old Town’s Dave Ploch was Class B Coach of the Year while Mount Ararat’s John Lloyd and South Portland’s Lloyd Crocker were Class A Coaches of the Year.

Her freshman year, Splane was named All-State in the 100 breaststroke. Her sophomore year, she was honored in the 200 free relay and 400 free relay. Her junior year, Splane was All-State in the 200 free relay and 100 breaststroke.

“Cate had a really good season,” said Clem Whaling, Bangor’s girls coach. “I was happy with her swims. She’s a very hard worker and she’s dedicated to the sport. She also had a great attitude with the rest of the team.”

Having hit this plateau “(It’s happened once before, when I was a sophomore,” Splane said), the Bangor High swimmer has stepped up the level of her training in preparation for the college level.

She has narrowed her college choices to the University of Delaware or Stony Brook University (SUNY-Stony Brook).

“You just have to keep positive,” Splane said. “It’s been rough on me, but you always have friends to keep you going. I’m just trying to look to the future. I don’t want to concentrate on the successes in my past, but the successes which will come in the future. I’ve just got to keep going.”

She’ll do so with four straight All-State swim honors on her resume.
