BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. – Reigning U.S. champion Sharon Petzold edged two-time world champion Ellen Breen by two-tenths of a point Thursday to win her second consecutive U.S. ballet ski title at Breckenridge Ski Area.
Her victory on the second day of the U.S. championships was a complete turnabout for the 22-year-old from Sugarloaf, Maine. On her previous visit, during a World Cup meet at Breckenridge in January, asthma and bronchitis combined to force Petzold into her worst meet of the season.
Petzold received 27.00 points from the judges on her second run while Breen slipped on an acrobatic double revolution and got 26.80 points.
Karen Hunter of Bangor, Maine, finished third with 24.70 in the warm sunshine after two days of snow. Lara Rosenbaum of Portsmouth, R.I., was fourth and Maria Guarnieri of Mahopoc, N.Y., fifth.
