ORONO – University of Maine junior righthander Mark Ballard said he couldn’t recall ever picking up two wins in one day. But there’s always a first time and that first time was Sunday.
Ballard pitched 10 innings of two-hit, one-run baseball over the first two games as the Black Bears registered three wins over Boston University – 11-0, 9-1, 10-2 – to extend their winning streak to nine games.
Maine is now 16-17 overall, 12-2 in the North Atlantic Conference. BU fell to 2-16, 1-10.
Ballard, a 6-foot-3, 240-pound Mechanic Falls native, picked up where Ronnie Hewes had left off in Saturday’s suspended game and pitched five innings of one-hit shutout baseball. He fanned four and walked one while throwing 53 pitches, 33 of which were strikes.
Following a 20-minute break after the opener, he started the second game and went on to hurl five innings of one-hit, one-run ball. He struck out five and walked three. He threw 50 strikes among his 74 pitches. Jason Dryswak came on to finish up with two innings of two-hit shutout ball.
“Other than the first inning of the second game, I felt really strong all the time,” said Ballard. “I thought I could have kept going. In that one inning, I lost my concentration. After I hit that kid (Dan Donato) with the pitch, I was so disappointed with myself.”
Ballard also said, “Everything was working for me, but I went mostly with my fastball. They were an aggressive hitting team. Over the last few innings, I went with my curve more. The key today was I kept the ball down.”
“He had good pop on the ball,” said Donato, the BU shortstop and co-captain.
“He threw hard and he worked ahead of the hitters,” said BU first baseman and captain Jack Janasiewicz.
The Terriers took a short-lived 1-0 lead in that first inning on John Harley’s RBI single, but Ballard induced Bryan Morry to ground out with the bases loaded. He went on to retire the final 12 men he faced.
Hot-hitting Glen Stupienski gave the Bears the lead for good in the bottom of the first by belting a two-out, three-run homer off loser Atsuhiro Karaki. Karaki had walked Shanan Knox and Shawn Tobin before Stupienski pulled a line drive over the right field fence.
Justin Tomberlin’s sharp two-out single to left delivered a third-inning run, Stupienski singled in a fourth-inning run, and the Bears added two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth innings. Gabe Duross’ two-run homer to right accounted for the sixth-inning runs.
Stupienski went 3-for-3 with four RBIs while Duross and Bill Champi had two hits each.
The Bears entered Sunday’s first game with a 3-0 lead manufactured before Saturday’s rains.
BU starter and loser Matt Goldstein walked Todd Livingston and Knox in the bottom of the first and Livingston scored when second baseman Harley dropped Goldstein’s throw on Chad White’s bunt single.
Tobin then roped a two-run double that hit the right field fence on the fly.
On Sunday, Kirk Svartstrom took the mound for BU and issued three one-out walks before Duross lofted a grand slam to right to break the game open.
“He had walked three in a row, so I knew he would have to throw a strike sometime,” said Duross. “He came in with a fastball that was a little up in the strike zone. It was a good pitch to hit.”
Stupienski had a solo homer and White, Duross, and Puleo had two hits each.
In Sunday’s final game, the Bears spotted BU 1-0 and 2-1 leads before capitalizing on three errors, 11 walks, five wild pitches, seven stolen bases, a balk, and timely hits from Livingston, White, Knox, and Bill Champi.
The Bears snapped a 2-2 tie to take the lead for good with three fourth-inning runs.
Champi drew a leadoff walk from Wilson, went to third on Wilson’s errant pickoff move, and scored on a wild pitch. Tomberlin drew a one-out walk and scored when Livingston’s hit-and-run double to right was misplayed by right fielder Brett Schultz.
Maine got two more in the fifth on Duross’ single, two walks, Tomberlin’s sacrifice fly, and Knox’s RBI single and they added their final three runs in the sixth on Duross’ double to left center and Champi’s two-run homer to left.
Ryan Smith picked up the win with relief help from LeRoy Decker and Lance Bogardus.
Livingston, Duross, and Champi had two hits apiece for Maine and Knox and Champi knocked in two runs each. Puscian, Aufiero, and Rich Correale had two apiece for BU with Aufiero and Janasiewicz singling home the runs.
“Saturday’s loss took a lot of wind out of our sails,” said Donato, referring to Maine’s two, two-out seventh-inning runs that produced a 6-5 win.
“Everybody on this team has a role, and they all performed their roles this weekend,” said Duross.
“I was pleased Dryswak and Bogardus got some work and seemed to be effective,” said Maine Coach John Winkin. “They could be very important down the line. We fielded well, we got timely hits, and we did some good things on the bases.”
