ELLSWORTH — Women’s legal issues will be the focus of a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Ellsworth Public Library.

The workshop, part of a public, free series dealing with women’s issues, will review the rights of married women, divorce and financial security, custody support, issues concerning unmarried people living together, and credit.

“Women are becoming wiser with regard to their financial situation,” said Roberta Kuriloff of the law offices of Platner and Kuriloff in Ellsworth. “But there are still many who don’t know what’s going on with the finances in the home and discover they’ve signed tax refunds without looking at them. Then, suddenly, they’re in debt.”

Two issues with which older women should become familiar pertain to power of attorney and guardianship, according to Eleanor Bruchey of Legal Services for the Elderly.

Kuriloff and Bruchey will lead the workshop, which is being sponsored jointly by the Ellsworth Center of the University of Maine System, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Down East Health Services, and Eastern Agency on Aging.
