Three area college players honored for week’s exploits

Three area college baseball players were honored for their performances last week by their respective league directors.

Matt Dutille of Husson College in Bangor was named to NAIA District 5 Player of the Week; Mark Ballard of the University of Maine was named North Atlantic Conference Pitcher of the Week; and Glen Stupienski of the University of Maine was named NAC Player of the Week.

Dutille, a senior right hander from Lebanon, N.H., was honored for his performance in last week’s game against Colby College. Dutille surrendered three hits and struck out 18 in a complete-game victory over the Mules. Dutille is already in the Husson College record books having compined with Peter Allen to thrown a no-hitter vs. UM-Farmington in an NAIA District 5 playoff game two years ago.

Ballard, a junior right hander from Mechanic Falls, picked up two victories in two games against Boston University last week. Ballard pitched a total of 10 innings and gave up only one run, two hits and four walks. He struck out nine.

Stupienski, a junior outfielder from Woodcliff Lake, N.J., batted .600 with four home runs and seven RBIs in four Maine victories. He also walked five times and scored six runs.
