PRESQUE ISLE – Freshman righthander Mark Hreben hurled 2 1/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief ball and sophomore left fielder Troy Martin had three hits and scored three times, including the winning run, to lead the Husson College Braves to a 7-3 win over University of Maine-Presque Isle and a split of their Wednesday doubleheader here.

Freshman southpaw Kent Willette spun a six-hitter in the opener and freshman center fielder Eric Mushlit doubled home the winning run in the fourth inning as UMPI triumphed 2-1.

Husson is now 8-7 overall and 1-1 in NAIA play. UMPI is 2-11, 2-6.

In the nightcap, Hreben struck out four and didn’t walk anybody to save Jamie Pete’s second win in as many decisions. Pete allowed four hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking four.

Husson broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning when he singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on an infield error.

The Braves added three insurance runs in the seventh on Mike McBride’s double, Sean Sullivan’s sacrifice bunt, Martin’s double and stolen base, an infield error, Frank Peckham’s RBI double and Billy Swift’s run-producing fielder’s choice.

Ron Mayo’s RBI double and Lance Bean’s sacrifice fly had staked Husson to a 2-0 lead in the second inning and Martin made it 3-0 in the third when he tripled and scored on Peckham’s fialder’s choice.

But the Owls tied it with three runs in the bottom of the third on a walk, a wild pitch, Tim Richard’s RBI single, Gene Crockett’s RBI double and a wild pitch.

Besides Martin, who also stole a pair of bases, UMPI’s Richard was the only other repeat hitter with two singles.

In the opener, Willette improved his record to 2-1 by outduelling Husson’s Peter Allen, now 0-3.

Willette struck out two and walked four while Allen hurled an eight-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Husson took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Martin singled, stole second and scored on Peckham’s base hit.

But the Owls got the runs they needed in the fourth on a walk to Crockett, a groundout, Mark Shields’ RBI single; an outfield throwing error and Mushlit’s double.

Husson had squandered a bases-loaded, no-out opportunity in the first inning as Peckham’s grounder turned into a double play on a runner’s interference call at second and Bill Swift lined out to short.

Willette was UMPI’s lone repeat hitter with two singles. Martin had a double and two singles for Husson and Peckham had a double and a single.
