ORONO – The University of Maine’s Janet Anderson was named Coach of the Year and a pair of Boston University players gained top individual honors as announced Friday by the North Atlantic Conference.

Anderson, head coach at Maine for 13 years, led her Bears to third place in the league and an 18-11 overall mark. Anderson has two ECAC titles to her credit at Maine.

Outfielder Michelle White of BU was named Player of the Year and Terrier Shannon Downey was chosen Pitcher of the Year in a vote of conference head coaches.

In addition, two Maine players gained first-team honors: sophomore Kelly Dow was named starting catcher and sophomore shortstop Kris Gorman took an infield berth.

Second-team Maine selections were pitcher Deb Smith, third baseman Kristin Steele, and outfielders Lisa Swain and Tenley Libby.

BU’s White, a sophomore from Claymont, Del., hit .437 with 37 RBIs. Downey, of Oceanside, Calif., chalked up a 20-1 mark for 29-3 BU with an ERA of 0.59 and 9.3 strikeouts per game.

Rounding out the first team are: pitcher Christine Etherington and infielder Janet Jones of Delaware; infielder Michele Juliano and DH Michele O’Toole of Hartford, infielder Tammy Kratz and outfielder Kelli Griffith of Drexel; outfielder Michelle White of BU; and outfielder Kelly Martin of Vermont.

The second team included: infielder Lisa Kosanovich and outfielder Lissy Myers of Delaware; pitcher Carolyn Carr, infielder Julie Hammond, catcher Laura Labanowki and DH Erin Metzger of Vermont; infielder Dale Fornoff of BU.
