Vaughan perfect for MCI

MILLINOCKET – Becky Vaughan pitched a perfect game, striking out 15, then hurled a five-hitter in the nightcap to lead Maine Central Institute to a sweep of Stearns in schoolgirl softball action here Wednesday.

MCI won the opener 13-0 in six innings, and took the second game 12-3. The Huskies are 9-1.

Stearns slipped to 1-9.

In the first game, Vaughan dominated, allowing only three pitches to be hit in fair territory. Courtney Cianchette socked a double and three singles, driving in two runs to spark the offense. Vaughan also tripled and doubled.

In the second game, Vaughan struck out seven and Emily Walker belted a two-run homer for MCI.

Jesse Barnes tripled, doubled, and singled, driving in two runs. Suzannah Barnes drove in two runs with two singles for the winners.

Stearns was led by Robyn Cyr and Heather Leet, who each had two singles.

Bucksport 8, Orono 0 Wardwell fires no-hitter

At Bucksport, Jen Wardwell fired her fourth career no-hitter as the Golden Bucks improved to 8-1 on the season.

Wardwell struck out 11 and walked one.

Kristin Ready and Jen Marzolf both had a triple and a single apiece for the winners while Jody Senter had a single and a double. Wardwell aided her own cause with a two-run single. Orono 000 000 0 – 0 0 4 Bucksport 301 022 x – 8 11 1

MDI 21, Belfast 13

At Mount Desert, the host Trojans scored 21 runs on only one base hit, scoring eight runs in the fifth to overcome an 8-7 deficit en route to the victory.

Belfast pitchers issued 22 walks. Beth Ashmore singled with two out and nobody on in the sixth inning for Mount Desert Island to break up a bizarre no-hit bid.

Melissa Collier scattered 10 hits while going the distance for the 5-4 Trojans.

Jen McAllin had a triple and two singles for 2-8 Belfast, while Allison Sheldon singled twice.

Forest Hills 10, Valley 7

At Jackman, Tarah Nadeau doubled and scored two runs, driving in another, to lift Forest Hills to the win in the rainy, muddy conditions in 5 1/2 innings.

Monique Morin also doubled and scored two runs for Forest Hills (2-3), while Jane Chamberlain doubled.

For Valley of Bingham (0-6), Charity Nichols drove in two runs with a single. Bridget Paddock tripled and Laurie Davis had two singles.

Hampden 13, Nokomis 5

At Newport, Hampden’s Amy Dwyer pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts as the Broncos boosted their record to 5-4.

Jen Craig hit a two-run homer for the winners and Heather Fortier singled three times.

Jody Pelkey had a two-run single for 1-6 Nokomus while Vivian Favis doubled and Betsy Buker added a single.

Searsport 22, John Bapst 7

At Husson College in Bangor, winning pitcher Jen Russ drove in three runs with two doubles and a singles to pace a 21- hit attack and lead the undefeated Vikings of Searsport to the win.

Bree Robert added a double, two singles, and two RBIs for the 8-0 winners.

For John Bapst, 3-6, Laura Boober had a single, a double, and a triple for three RBIs while Angel Graham plated two with two doubles and two singles.

At Thorndike, Jill Young doubled and singled to pace the Windjammers to their first win of the season against seven losses.

Mount View (0-6) was led by Julie Buffington’s triple and single. Cheryl Reynolds added two doubles.

At Ellsworth, Wendy Davis scattered nine hits and notched the win while the Hermon Hawks took advantage of 14 Ellsworth errors to notch the win.

D.J. Glazier, Heidi Pace, and Marcie Burr each singled twice for the 4-4 Hawks.

For the 4-4 Eagles, Rebecca Stanley tripled, doubled, singled, and had two RBIs. Amy King hit a two-run single.

Bangor 11, Old Town 10

At Old Town, Kim Sherman reached second on an error, was sacrificed to third by Mandy Ingalls, and then scored on a passed ball with one out in the top of the eighth inning giving the Bangor Rams the close win over Old Town.

The win evened Bangor’s record at 4-4 while Old Town slipped to 6-3. All three of Old Town’s losses have come in extra innings, including the last two.

Michelle Puls keyed Bangor with two triples and two RBIs while Cori Wheeldon had a triple and a single. Jamie Owens added two singles.

For Old Town, Jen LePage had a triple and two singles and two RBIs while Jessica Bryant had a single and a triple. Erika Nadeau had a single and a double and Becky Blue had two singles. All three girls added an RBI.

At East Sullivan, Abby Seward had three singles to key the Sumner Tigers to the win over Deer Isle-Stonington.

Kelly Wold had two singles and Ginny Shaw had a two-run double for the 5-4 winners. Lonna Perry had a two-run single.

For the 2-8 Mariners, Phoebe Scott-Wyard had two singles and a triple while Dana Hoberg had two singles.

Carnes no-hits PCHS

At Dexter, sophomore pitcher Marlene Carnes hurled her first high school no-hitter, striking out 16, to lift Dexter to the win.

Tammy Downing had an RBI double and Tammy Paige drove her in with a single to spark the two-run fourth inning for the Tigers (5-2).

Piscataquis Community of Guilford (5-4) was led by pitcher Heather Johnson, who hurled a three-hitter.
