KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Wally Joyner had two of his three hits and two RBIs in the first inning as the Kansas City Royals scored nine runs with two out en route to a 13-8 victory Wednesday night over the Oakland Athletics.
Joyner, George Brett, Felix Jose, Mike Macfarlane, Greg Gagne and Chris Gwynn had two RBIs apiece.
The A’s, who used six pitchers, got RBI doubles from Dale Sveum and Scott Lydy and a two-run single by Mike Bordick in a four-run sixth inning.
The A’s scored twice in the eighth on Brent Gates’ first major-league homer and an RBI single by Bordick. He had three hits and three RBIs.
Everybody in the Royals’ lineup scored in the first against Shawn Hillegas (1-4) was the loser. Tom Gordon (1-2) got the victory in relief. Jeff Montgomery got the final four outs for his 11th save.
