BLUE HILL — A local man remained in the hospital Monday after a head-on collision Sunday that resulted in the death of his wife, 89-year-old Phyllis Monroe.

The collision occurred at 1:45 p.m. after driver Willis Monroe, 89, failed to see a southbound vehicle driven by Scott Robinson, 18, of Orland making a left-hand turn from Route 15 onto the Tamworth Farm Road in Blue Hill. Police reported that Monroe drove his 1989 Dodge Caravan into Robinson’s path.

Phyllis Monroe sustained massive head injuries and was taken to a Bangor hospital where she was pronounced dead shortly after 6:30 p.m. Willis Monroe was listed in fair condition at the hospital on Monday, after treatment for a broken knee and shoulder and facial lacerations.

The Blue Hill Fire Department extricated Robinson from the 1989 Dodge Omni he had been driving, after which he was taken to a local hospital for treatment for lacerations. Passenger Seth Taylor, 19, of Orland, was kept at the hospital for observation for possible internal injuries.

Information on whether the victims wore seat belts was unavailable when the the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department was contacted Monday. The department was assisted at the accident scene by Peninsula Ambulance, Bucksport Ambulance, and Capital Ambulance.
