The Camden-Rockport boys and the Cape Elizabeth girls will be banking on the tradition of their respective programs when they compete in the Team Tennis Tournament State Championships Saturday at the University of Maine in Orono.
The Windjammers are making their fifth straight trip to state championship competition and will be out to defend their 1992 Class B schoolboy title. The Capers have claimed three consecutive Class B schoolgirl tennis crowns.
Saturday’s court action begins with the Class C title matches at 10 a.m. Calais carries the Eastern Maine flag against Yarmouth in the boys match, with Woodland taking on St. Dominic of Lewiston.
In Class B, the Camden-Rockport boys take on Cape Elizabeth, while Mount Desert Island squares off against Cape Elizabeth in the B girls competition. Both of those matches begin at noon.
In the Class A competition, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., the Caribou girls meet South Portland and the boys from Cony of Augusta clash with Sanford.
Class A
Caribou takes a 15-0 record into the schoolgirl title match. The fourth-seeded Vikings are sparked by singles players Anne Bernard, Lise Carter, and Chelsea Belanger, along with the doubles duos of Karen Rockwell-Jenny Hunter and Sheri Dyer-Tiffany Pelletier.
Fourth-seeded Caribou advanced with a 5-0 victory over No. 5 Waterville in the quarterfinals, a 3-2 win over top-seeded Cony in the semis, and a 5-0 victory over No. 3 Gardiner in the regional championship.
The top-seeded South Portland girls come into the match at 12-0.
The No. 2 Cony boys (13-1) will take on Sanford behind singles players John Gasink, Seth Meyer, and Jason Brann, along with doubles pairs John Martin-Mark Sienko and Jake Claslin-Scott Flagg.
The second-seeded Rams (13-1) dispatched No. 7 Brewer 5-0, No. 3 Brunswick 3-2 and top-seeded Caribou 4-1 to win the regional tourney.
Sanford, the top seed in the West, takes a 13-0 mark into the finals.
Class B
Camden-Rockport (10-4) is no stranger to state championship play, but features an entirely new lineup this year. The No. 4 Windjammers rely on singles standouts Carlos Costa, Geoff Oldread, and Art Van Sciver, while doubles teams are made up of Marc Macfarlane-Jay Mitchell and Sebastian Quinn-Mike Theriault.
The 10-4 ‘Jammers reached the title match by virtue of close victories over No. 5 Foxcroft Academy (3-2), top-seeded Ellsworth (3-2), and No. 6 Houlton (3-2).
Cape Elizabeth, the West’s top seed, boasts a 14-0 record.
In Class B girls play, top-seeded Mount Desert Island (16-0) will try to stop Cape’s championship streak at three in a row. The Trojans’ strong lineup includes singles players Nellie Fox, Laura Welles, and Jill Pelletier, and doubles duos Sarah Muzzy-Anna Hathaway and Martha Ratner-Chafee Emory.
MDI, which had a first-round by in the EM tourney, beat No. 5 Camden-Rockport 5-0 in the semis before taking the regional title with a 4-1 win over third-seeded Ellsworth.
The Cape Elizabeth girls were the top seed in Western Maine and have a 14-0 record.
Class C
The Calais boys and the Woodland girls likely will be cheering each other on during the Class C competition as the two are longtime rivals representing their area.
The No. 2 Blue Devils (12-0) have a formidable lineup made up of Lloyd Ayer, John Gibson, Matt Bailey, and doubles partners Josh Delmonaco-Micah Perkins and Craig Worster-Nicholas Delmonaco.
Calais (12-0), the East’s No. 2 seed, posted a 4-1 victory over No. 3 Penobscot Valley of Howland in the semis and blanked No. 1 Schenck of East Millinocket 5-0 for the regional crown.
The Yarmouth boys were seeded No. 2 and boast a 13-2 mark.
The Woodland girls, the No. 3 seed with a 9-3 record, will face St. Dominic for the Class C girls championship. The Dragons’ mainstays are Christina James, Jodi Hiland, Kim Johnson, Kelly McHugh, Christina Flood, Stacy Pratt, and Melissa Bailey.
The Dragons beat No. 2 Schenck 4-1 and then bested No. 4 Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln 4-1 in the playoffs.
St. Dominic (12-3) went into the tourney as the No. 4 seed.
