What is the meaning of Memorial Day? As I drove through Madawaska on Memorial Day morning, I saw very few flags flying. But what distressed me the most was that those on government and municipal buildings were at top mast.

Is this how we honor our dead comrades? The flag at the American Legion was the only one at half mast until noon, as per regulation. Instead of honoring the dead, everybody seems to be rejoicing. It is comforting to know that the eyes of those who gave their lives for their country are closed in death, so that they cannot see such shameful and degrading activity. Charles Daigle Veteran, 45th Cavalry Madawaska
