“Unicameral” is an idea that should be considered in depth by the people of Maine. …
Our state government is top heavy. Why not adopt the unicameral government plan which has done well for Nebraska over the last 56 years or so? Nebraska has a legislature of 49 people in one house only — that’s unicameral — against our 185 in both Senate and House — that is a difference of more than 3 to 1 in Nebraska’s favor. Their population is upward of more than 2 million while their area is 77,227 square miles against our 33,215 over twice as large and Maine’s population of approximately 1.225 million.
I would expect with the down-sizing of Augusta that we could more simply govern this state which is in dire need of simplification of organization and of throwing off the fetters of confrontational politics which has typified the era of the Martin machine. There are just too many irons in the fire, too many egos to be bruised and no leaders in the Legislature to rally around a stand to bite the bullet. Unless something comes along soon to ameliorate our plight, God help the property owners of this state. John M. Allen Searsport
