SAN FRANCISCO – Bill Swift threw two-hit ball for eight innings and struck out seven Sunday, leading the San Francisco Giants over the Colorado Rockies 5-0.
Swift (10-4) gave up a single to Alex Cole leading off the game, then retired the next 12 batters, striking out the side in the second inning. The righthander, a former University of Maine star, didn’t allow another hit until Freddie Benavides doubled down the left-field line in the seventh.
Swift struck out seven, walked one and faced only one batter over the minimum before Mike Jackson finished with a hitless ninth.
For the Rockies, their newest pitcher looked like more of the same. Brought up this week from Class AAA Colorado Springs, Curt Leskanic (0-1) appeared to have a major-league case of the jitters. His first nine pitches were balls and included one hit batsman, one walk and one visit from manager Don Baylor.
His 11th pitch, to Will Claen Lewis scored on Matt Williams’ sacrifice fly. Barry Bonds drove in another run on what should have been an extra-base hit off the center-field wall. But the play was scored a fielder’s choice when Clark mistakenly returned to first base and was forced out at second.
After that, Leskanic settled down, retiring the side in order in the second inning. He allowed seven hits in seven innings, walking three.
In the fourth, Bonds led off with a single, went to second on Willie McGee’s single and scored on Benavides’ throwing error.
After Lewis doubled in the seventh and Mike Benjamin followed with his third homer of the year. Notes: Leskanic was the 10th pitcher to start for Colorado. … With the win, the Giants improved to 18-7 and moved within one victory of the franchise record for June, 19-11 in 1964. San Francisco has three games remaining this month.
