ORONO – Proceeds from the third annual University of Maine hockey alumni game will benefit former Black Bear All-American Andre Aubut, who was paralyzed in a hockey game in April.
The game will be held at 7 p.m. on July 17 at Alfond Arena.
Thirteen of Aubut’s former teammates are expected to play in the alumni game which being coordinated by the Friends of Maine Hockey.
Among those returning are Robert LeFleur, Jon Leach, Marc Son, Joe Crespi, Bill Demianiuk, David Ellis, Paul Giacalone, Brian Hughes, Jim Tortorella, Peter Maher and Ray Jacques.
In addition, more recent alumni, including current NHL players Bob Beers and Eric Weinrich, are expected to play. Garth Snow, Jim Montgomery, Matt Martin and Kent Salfi, all members of the 1992-93 national championship team, and Guy Perron, Scott King, Jean-Yves Roy and Bruce Major have also committed. Also, former Boston Bruins All-Star Brad Park and current Bruin Steve Leach will be in attendance.
Former Black Bear coach Jack Semler, who started the program in 1977 and coached Aubut during his collegiate career, will return to Alfond as a coach of one of the alumni teams. Former assistant coaches Jay Leach and Joe Clark will also attend.
“We are extremely pleased to be involved in an event such as this,” said Jack Hart, president of Friends of Maine Hockey. “Many of us were devastated to hear of Andre’s misfortune and this is a way to help aid his recovery.”
Aubut, who played at Maine from 1978-82, became the first Black Bear All-American in 1980. He left the school with nine school records for defensemen, and still owns UM defensemen marks for goals in a career (32) and one game (3); assists in a game (5); and points in a career (135), and one game (5), which he accomplished five times.
All seating will be general admission. Tickets are $10 and are available at Daniels Insurance, Gunn’s Sports Shop, Goldsmith’s Sporting Goods, Legends Restaurant and Sports Bar, and the University of Maine athletic ticket office, or by calling 581-BEAR.
