The Forum
The Forum is a new feature being introduced by the NEWS Sports Dept. to inform, interpret and explain as well as express opinions concerning the sports scene. Readers are encouraged to write in with questions, comments or anecdotes and we’ll try our best to give answers/replies when appropriate. This is not intended to be a “letters to the editor” column, per se, so please keep it brief. Write to: Bangor Daily News Sports, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor, ME 04402-1329.
READER Dick Kleiner of Brooksville, a retired newsman, writes to say: “As a newspaperman for 45 years, I understand the problems you have trying to please everyone. However, I do feel that in your zeal to cover local sports, you have lost sight of your primary responsibility – covering national sports….”
FORUM: The NEWS was built on local coverage and it remains our primary concern, although we try to include as much national news as possible. You can read about major league baseball in USA Today or the Boston and New York papers (all available in Maine), but those papers will not carry results of the Bangor-Brewer game or the West Side Little League playoffs. A recent readership survey upheld our credo as high school and youth-oriented sports remained the sports topic in which most readers were interested. Pro and college sports trailed by a large margin.
SEVERAL CALLERS interested in following the Little League baseball all-star playoffs in Bangor this season have inquired about directions to get to Taylor Field on the east side. They are as follows:
FORUM: From Broadway get on Stillwater Avenue headed toward the Bangor Mall. Proceed three-tenths of a mile. Look for Forest Avenue, which intersects Stillwater. Take a left onto Forest Ave. (at the First Ave. Congregational Church) and proceed to the end, following sign to Taylor Field.
