Robbie White sparks Twins

ORONO – Brewer’s Robbie White recently returned from Cape Cod where he was a reserve infielder-pitcher for Jay Kemble’s Harwich team in the talent-laden Cape Cod League.

His second game back in the Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League was a memorable one on Thursday evening as he drove in four runs with a three-run homer and a double, scored three times, and pitched a complete game five-hitter to lead Bangor-Brewer past Old Town-Orono 9-4 at Mahaney Diamond here.

Bangor-Brewer is now 3-5 while Old Town-Orono fell to 4-7.

“Playing in the Cape Cod League was a great experience, but I wasn’t playing and I thought it was important (for my career at Husson College) to get as much playing time as I can this summer,” said White.

White was complemented by his former Husson College teammate, right fielder Frank Peckham, who had a two-run homer and an RBI double.

White struck out six and walked four over the seven innings while throwing 65 strikes among his 112 pitches. One of the runs was unearned.

“I just started a construction job and I was tight,” said White, who featured a fastball, curve, and knuckleball. “I didn’t have much. I just tried to throw strikes.”

“He mixed up his pitches pretty well and he kept the ball down,” said Old Town-Orono catcher Rich Rygalski.

The Twins spotted the Double O’s a 1-0 first-inning lead when Sean Sullivan walked, raced all the way to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Rygalski’s sacrifice fly.

But they answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead for good.

Jamie White drew a leadoff walk, and Andy Kiah delivered him with a triple to the gap in right-center field. Kiah scored when White ripped a ground ball double down the left field line.

They made it 4-1 in the third when White drew a one-out walk off loser Brett Brown and Peckham followed by tomahawking a high, inside pitch over the left field fence.

“I don’t know what made me swing at it,” said Peckham, whose homer was his second of the summer. “He got a pitch up, I had two strikes on me (1-2 count), and I just caught up with it.”

Old Town-Orono got a pair back in the fourth on Rygalski’s base hit, Dana Andrews’ RBI triple to left-center, and Ryan Soucy’s sacrifice fly.

White rebuilt the lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fourth as he greeted reliever Greg White with his opposite-field homer to right. Bennie Campbell had singled and Kiah had drawn a one-out walk to chase Brown in favor of White.

“I knew it was gone right after I hit it,” said Robbie White.

Rygalski said Greg White had thrown Robbie White a split-fingered fastball and didn’t get it down.

Jason Tardy singled home a sixth-inning run for the Double O’s, but Robbie White got pinch-hitter Mike Thibodeau to bounce into a 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded to escape further damage.

Bangor-Brewer added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth on a walk, Peckham’s long double to center, and John Peterson’s RBI single to center.

Campbell also had two hits for the winners.

Rygalski had two singles and a sacrifice fly for the losers and Soucy had a single, a sacrifice fly, and a walk in his three plate appearances.
