Bangor sweeps over Calais

Tony Fernandez’s two-run single with two outs in the fifth inning of the second game keyed a three-run rally that gave Bangor a come-from-behind 9-7 win over Calais and a sweep of their Wednesday Zone 1 American Legion baseball doubleheader at Garland Street Field in Bangor.

Bangor, which overcame a 7-0 deficit in the nightcap, won the opener 6-0 behind righty Chad Scripture’s two-hitter.

Bangor is now 8-8 while Calais fell to 3-11.

In the nightcap, an error and two walks set the stage for Fernandez’s decisive hit and Bangor pushed across an insurance run with a double steal.

Fernandez had two base hits for the winners; Roy Peary had a triple and a double and Mark McEwen and Josh Jamieson had two singles apiece. Peary went the distance for the win.

Shirl Penney had three singles for Calais. Troy Dennison had a three-run double and Paul Napoleoni had a two-run single.

In the opener, Scripture struck out two and walked two en route to his complete-game shutout. He threw 83 pitches.

Bangor gave him the only runs he was to need in the first inning when it scored three times on Peary’s lead-off homer, two errors, Fernandez’s RBI single and Justin Shaw’s sacrifice fly.

Mark Reed and Jamieson had two singles apiece for Bangor. Penney’s double and Napoleoni’s single were the only hits off Scripture.

Loser Derek Armstrong went the distance.
