After being shut out on three hits by Trenton’s Mike Clough (2-0) on Tuesday, the Brewer Falcons were anxious to swing the bats against Trenton’s Jason Brown on Thursday.
The Falcons erupted for five hits and six runs in the first two innings en route to a 10-3 American Legion baseball triumph over the error-prone Acadians at Heddericg Field in Brewer.
Brewer is now 9-5 while Trenton, which made seven errors, fell to 6-7.
“We didn’t hit the ball well on Tuesday so we took a lot of rips in batting practice on Wednesday,” said Brewer designated hitter Tim Hodgins, who had a pair of hits, scored three times and knocked in two runs. “We got back on track tonight.”
“We weren’t aggressive enough and we swung at bat pitches on Tuesday,” said winning pitcher Ben Jenkins, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. “But we were zoning the ball up and swinging at good pitches tonight.”
The Falcons took the lead for good just three pitches into lefty Brown’s 1 2/3-inning stint when Sean Smith gapped a double to left center on a 1-0 pitch and Hodgins pulled the next pitch down the right-field line for another double.
Jenkins sacrificed Hodgins to third and Hodgins scored on Tiger Stewart’s fielder’s choice.
In the second, Mike Wentworth was hit by a pitch and Mike Tardif singled down the third-base line to trigger the four-run rally.
After Smith grounded into a 6-4 fielder’s choice and stole second, Wentworth scored when Hodgins hit a sinking line-drive single to center. Smith scored when catcher Aaron Naumann’s throw to second on Hodgins’ stolen base attempt glanced off the glove of second baseman Matt McDonald.
Jenkins lined a run-scoring double to left center and, an out and a hit batsman later, Greg Crossman hit a sharp RBI single to right.
Trenton rallied for three runs in the third on consecutive singles by McDonald, Adam Gray and Naumann; Will Holloway’s one-out RBI single; Jeff Haskins’ sacrifice fly and Matt Haney’s single which was bobbled by center fielder Tony Brigalli.
Jenkins walked Scott Kenny to reload the bases but Dan Curtis grounded to second to end the threat.
Jenkins pitched three-hit, shutout baseball the rest of the way.
“I hadn’t pitched in two weeks and I was trying to throw too hard early in the game,” said Jenkins, who finished with an eight-hitter with no strikeouts and four walks. “All my pitches were up. After that, I settled down and I kept the ball down.”
Brewer got a run back in the bottom of the third on a walk, two fielder’s choices and a throwing error at third by first baseman Haskins. The Falcons they added three unearned runs in the fifth on three errors, a walk and run-scoring singles by Jenkins and Brent Emerson.
McDonald had two hits for Trenton.
