Brewer Seniors and Bangor Jrs. win titles

The Brewer Senior Little League All-Stars came out of the losers’ bracket to win four consecutive games and capture the District 3 championship during the weekend’s action held at Mansfield Complex in Bangor.

Brewer beat Old Town twice on Sunday, taking the title with a 12-8 victory in the second game. Brewer moves on to the state tournament.

The Bangor Junior Little League All-Stars won two games over the weekend to win the District 3 championship and advance to state tournament action, also played at Mansfield Complex.

Bangor handled Brewer 23-2 in Sunday’s championship game after having posted a 12-2 victory over Old Town in Saturday’s action. The Bangor Juniors, who finished 3-0 in the tournament, will play in the state championship tourney, which begins July 26 at Westbrook.

In Saturday’s Senior Little League games, Brewer bounced back from a Friday loss with a 9-8, nine-inning victory over Bangor and Old Town edged Millnocket 10-8.

In Saturday’s Junior Little League play, Brewer beat Millinocket, then Brewer downed Old Town 12-2.

Monday’s Little League schedule is as follows:

District 3 baseball: 4-1 Millinocket at 4-1 Bangor West, 0-1 Machias at 1-0 Houlton; District 3 softball: 2-1 Machias at 2-0 Bangor East; District 2 baseball: 1-1 Knox Suburban at 2-1 Belfast; District 3 Senior softball: 0-0 Bucksport at 0-0 Bangor

Brewer 12, Old Town 8

In Sunday’s championship game, Brewer’s five-run sixth inning paved the way to the title.

Jim Violette plated two runs with a double and two singles, Jamie Wilkinson a triple and two singles (1 RBI) and relief winner Ryan Ellingson a double and two singles (1 RBI). Mike Kane doubled and singled.

Seth Gilman had two hits and two RBIs and John Powers had a double and a single for Old Town, which finished 2-2.

In Sunday’s first game, 13 Old Town errors helped Brewer prevail.

Violette paced Brewer, driving in three runs with a double and two singles. Don Sawyer stroked three hits (1 RBI) to back winner Jason Hardy.

Gilman doubled and singled for Old Town.

In a Saturday elimination game, Brewer rode an early 11-1 lead to victory.

Violette scattered six hits and was backed by a 14-hit barrage. Sawyer doubled and singled (1 RBI), as did Jeff Snow. Wilkinson had two hits and an RBI and Hardy added a two-run single.

Jim Montgomery paced 0-2 Millinocket with a triple and a single good for two RBIs, while Aaron Porter had two hits (1 RBI) and Wade Coffin an RBI triple.

In Saturday’s second game, Goody rapped a two-run single with two out in the seventh inning to lift Old Town to victory.

Jeff Kimball doubled and singled for the winners, with John Powers (1 RBI), Shane Sapiel and Corey Young stroking two hits apiece behind relief winner Goody.

Coffin had three hits (1 RBI), John Montgomery a double and a single (2 RBIs) and Osborne a pair of singles (1 RBI) for Millinocket.

On Saturday morning, Brewer came up with two runs in the ninth inning to slip past Bangor.

Kane pushed across four runs with three singles for Brewer, with relief winner Mark Perkins (2 RBIs), Scott Enman, Wilkinson and Sawyer chipping in with two hits apiece.

Keith Dorr poked a double and two singles, and Ryan Mick pounded a three-run double for 0-2 Bangor.

Junior Little League

Bangor 23, Brewer 2

In Sunday’s final, Bangor captured the District 3 Junior Little League crown behind the pitching of Josh Pressley and a hard-hitting lineup.

The game was called after five innings because of the 12-run rule.

Pressley pitched a perfect game for 3 2/3 innings before giving up a single to Brewer’s Scott Tremble. Pressley fanned seven in four innings, then Tommy Waterman pitched the seventh.

Tim LeBlanc knocked in three runs with a double and a single for Bangor, with Chris McLean providing two hits and two RBIs.

Starter Chris Whitney took the loss.

In Saturday night’s matchup, Tremble tossed a one-hitter, striking out three, as Brewer eliminated Old Town.

Whitney rapped three singles and knocked in three runs for the winners, while Tremble helped his cause with a double and a single. Corey Gonzales and Josh Tracy each singled and knocked in two runs.

Jason Carey singled for Old Town.

On Saturday afternoon, Mike Arsenault fired a five-hitter to send Bangor into the title game.

Arsenault struck out five and walked four while hitting a triple. Josh Pressley paced the plate attack with a double and a single (3 RBIs), while Chris McLean had a two-run double and Tommy Waterman a triple.

Ryan McDougal singled twice for Old Town behind Chad Moors, who suffered the loss.
