Dan Jones, admissions director at Maine Maritime Academy, has completed the Great Lakes phase of the Finlandia Clean Water Challenge – the world’s longest canoe and kayak race.
Jones began his kayak trek June 27 and reached St. Catherine’s on the southern shore of Lake Ontario July 15. He still must paddle the Erie Canal barge system and then a stretch of the Hudson River from Albany to New York City before he finishes.
Finishers will have traveled 1,000 nautical miles in more than five weeks. Sponsors of the race hope to raise $1 million in donations to be used for waterway preservation and cleanup.
