I was appalled when I read in the July 15 edition of the BDN an editorial cartoon showing the Midwestern part of the United States as “the Great Lakes.” Many people in this area are suffering human, economic, and personal property loss as a result of this terrible disaster. Poor judgment in printing this cartoon brings to mind the “kick ’em while they’re down” mentality.

It is too bad the BDN cannot display the compassion that numerous volunteers have during the flooding.

Instead of drawing this cartoon maybe the artist should head to Des Moines and get in line to sandbag levees. Leslie M. Smith Hrabik Belfast
