Golf, game to benefit Jimmy Fund

More than 120 local golfers and celebrities will play in the Barbara Leavitt Memorial Golf Classic Monday at Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono to benefit The Jimmy Fund.

The scramble golf event begins at 11 a.m. Among the celebrities are several people formerly connected with the Boston Red Sox.

They include manager Joe Morgan, radio announcer Ken Coleman, pitcher Bill Lee, shortstop and manager Johnny Pesky, utility player Dalton Jones, second baseman Mike Andrews, and outfielder Rick Miller.

Other celebrities include Noel Paul Stookey, former Cincinnati Reds All-Star outfielder George Foster, Donn Fendler, and former New England Patriots coach Dick MacPherson.

After the tournament, there will be an auction of signed artwork and other items.

In the evening, some of the players will change into the baseball uniforms of the Grey Sox and, with their teammates, will challenge the Eastern Maine Amateur Baseball League All-Stars at 7 p.m. at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.

Half of the net proceeds of the game will also go to The Jimmy Fund as a donation to the Barbara Leavitt Memorial Golf Classic.

The golf tournament is named in honor of the wife of former Bangor Daily News Executive Sports Editor Bud Leavitt. Barbara Leavitt died of cancer in 1990.
