Mount Desert artist open their studios

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND — Thirteen artists on Mount Desert Island will hold shows and sales at their individual studios across the island during Open Studio Day on Saturday, Aug. 7.

“This will be our third annual Open Studio Day,” says organizer Susan Gross. “The format is the same — with our belief that a studio setting is less formal than a gallery, and gives a more intimate look at how an artist creates.”

Gross got the idea from old-fashioned summer art colonies, where everyone opened their studios to visitors on the same day.

Visitors may call ahead for directions to the various studios. A map with information describing the entire Studio Circle will be available at each of the 13 locations.

The artists by village include:

Bar Harbor, Emily Bracale, 4 Pleasant St., second floor, watercolor paintings and linoleum block prints and cards; Jason Devine, 9 Strawberry Hill, front, photography; Susan Gross, 9 Strawberry Hill, rear, paintings influenced by prehistoric Native American rock art and pottery patterns; Sean Murphy, Bar Harbor Municipal Building, top floor (use side entrances), figurative abstraction and alchemical symbolism using mixed media; Robert Phipps, 122 Cottage St., third floor (enter left of restaurant), artwork with an appreciation for the environment.

Northeast Harbor, Dan Falt, Maple and Forest lanes, wood sculpture.

Somesville, Polly Cote, Parker Farm Road, oil paintings, woodcut prints and dry-point etchings.

Southwest Harbor, Sharon Arnold, black and white photographic images that are hand-colored using oils and dyes, and Rebecca Cumin, oil paintings, both artists are at 108 Main St., third floor (above Drydock Cafe); Patty Kelley-Hall, Wesley Avenue, paintings on paper and intaglio pieces.

Town Hill, Joanna Crell, Route 3, Eden (Between Northeast Creek and Knox Road), artwork concentrates on all forms of gardens; Jeanne Perkins, Indian Point Road, oil portraits and batiks on cloth.
