Former Maine Central Institute coach Earl Anderson is expected to be nominated for the boys varsity basketball position at Hampden Academy during Wednesday night’s school board meeting.
According to board chairman Ralph Thompson, Anderson’s name is expected to be brought up before the board during the meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at the Hampden Academy Library.
“Well, the (agenda) information has been passed out and, if I’m not mistaken, his name is on there,” Thompson said. “Of course, nothing is final until the board takes a vote.”
Superintendent of Schools Richard Lyons makes the nomination Superintendent of Schools Richard Lyons makes the nominations for all academic and extra curricular positions, which are then voted on by the school board.
Lyons could not be reached for comment on Sunday night, but Anderson said he was looking forward to getting back onto the court after a three years away from the game.
“I just missed it, missed everything about it,” the 36-year-old Anderson said. “I hear a lot of coaches say they’ll miss the games, but not the practices. I think practices are the most fun. That’s where you do all the teaching. The games are the ones that will drive you crazy.”
After graduating from Orono High School in 1975, Anderson returned to the Red Riots during their 1980-81 state Class B basketball championship winning season as an assistant coach. He later coached basketball for four seasons at MCI and baseball for nine years.
He will continue to teach history at the Pittsfield school while commuting to Hampden for the basketball season.
He will be taking over a Hampden Academy team which made it to the Eastern Maine Class A quarterfinals last season. The Broncos lost only two seniors from that team.
“From what I’ve heard they’ve got some talent coming back,” Anderson said. “The cupboards are not bare. That’s often not the case.”
Hampden Athletic Director Bill Conners has been asked by Lyons not to comment on any vacant coaching positions.
The nomination of Anderson comes after Hampden Academy reopened the search to replace former coach Jim DiFrederico for a second time. The first search yielded a number of qualified candidates who were also looking for teaching positions. Until recently, Hampden had no teacher openings.
DiFrederico, who resigned his Hampden position to take the same post at Nokomis High School in Newport, led the Broncos to a 23-49 record in his four years as the head of the Broncos.
Meanwhile, Conners did announce that Waldo Caballero has been confirmed as the new boys soccer coach at the school.
“We’re very pleased,” Conners said. “I’m kind of excited because we’ll be playing a different style of soccer. A lot of finesse, a lot of passing to people instead of passing to areas. I think we’ll continue to be very competitive.”
Caballero replaces Pedro Quint, who coached the Broncos during the 1992 season.
Other confirmations for the fall sports season included Randy Dodge as girls soccer coach and Nancy Raymond as cheering advisor.
