Young musicians to play in Rockport

CAMDEN — Young Maine musicians participating in Bay Chamber Concerts Next Generation program Aug. 14-21 in Rockport will give three free concerts at the newly air-conditioned Rockport Opera House at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, and Monday, Aug. 17, and at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 21.

The Saturday, Aug. 14, concert will feature 33 members of the Bay Chamber Next Generation Band under the direction of Eric Rombach, director of Bands at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque, and co-artistic director of the Next Generation Program. The band will play works by Samuel Adler, Clifton Williams and Bob Margolis.

On Monday evening young ensembles will perform works by Schubert, Stamitz, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Joplin, Dvorak, Busoni, Klengel and Corelli.

On Saturday afternoon, Aug. 21, the more advanced concert students will perform works by Brahms, Schubert, Dvorak, Bach, Mozart, and Dancla.

Both the young ensemble and concert programs are under the direction of co-artistic directors pianist Kathie Johnson and cellist Mark Johnson, a member of the Vermeer Quartet.

Nationally and internationally acclaimed musicians including pianist Leonard Hokanson, violist Marcus Thompson, flutist Thomas Wolf, and violinist Julia Adams of the Portland String Quartet, will coach the students during the participation in the Next Generation program.
