In response to “Brewer Police” (Aug. 4).

It is a fact B.P.D. has had two accidents. That’s exactly what they were, accidents. Instead of condemning the police and worrying about the citizens buying another cruiser, why not take the time to thank God no one was fatally injured. I’m sure B.P.D. has insurance on cruisers, they can be replaced; a human life cannot.

The city of Brewer needs every officer it has. If your home were being broken into and you were about to face an armed intruder, who would you want to help you. A police officer or a fire fighter?

I’d be impressed to hear a 911 operator tell me, “Sorry, we’re unable to send a police officer but we do have a fireman available.” I’d prefer the cop, someone who has the means of protecting me, not some guy with a fire hose in his hand. What’s he going to do, drown the intruder?

We need every man we have in both departments and each should be shown the appreciation they deserve for serving the city of Brewer.

An accident is an unintended happening. No one needs to be condemned — a citizen or a police officer while on duty. Those officers are what keep the streets of Brewer safe for those who live here and, like myself, work here. Carol Ashe Brewer
