FARMINGTON — Donald Strout of Orono and Joseph Watson of Winterport were award recipients at the annual University of Maine at Farmington 1993 Alumni Weekend held recently on campus.
Strout, a member of the Class of 1938, received the Florence Hewey Archibald Service Award for outstanding service to the Alumni Association. He has served on the Alumni Scholars Committee since its inception in 1984. He also has been active in the Eastern Maine (Bangor) Alumni Chapter and served on the Council of the Alumni Association for several years.
A graduate of UMF in 1961, Watson was presented the Unsung Hero Award, given to the alumnus who, with no expectations of gratitude or monetary rewards, has devoted much time and energies to his community in ways that are not always recognized or rewarded. This person is one who worked behind the scenes performing tasks that often go unnoticed yet are very essential. He has been instrumental in establishing the Penobscot Valley Junior High League for sports, the present Winterport Historical Association, and a community park and center for Winterport.
