After reading in your newspaper on Aug. 13 of praise from Education Commissioner Leo Martin of ECO 2000, I had to wonder if the commissioner had truly seen what Outcome-Based Learning can really do for Presque Isle area students.

Other states have adopted Outcome-Based Education (OBE), and many of them have been sorry that they did. Parents in Brownsville, Pa., successfully got it out of their school district when they discovered that their children were actually learning less than before the OBE systen.

Some of the programs that schools are adopting, such as OBE and Mastery Learning (ML), are very difficult to reject, once a school district has accepted them.

We as parents and educators want only the best for our children, there is no question about that. We must all ask ourselves if it truly is the best for our children to waste precious education time on programs that have proven to be failures in other states.
