College Soccer
The University of Maine women’s soccer team struggled over the weekend, losing 1-0 on the road to Brown on Saturday, and 3-0 in Orono to Vermont on Sunday.
At Providence, Emily Benson scored on a pass from Mia Dannen 57:14 into the game and Sarah Kelly made 11 saves on 18 shots to stymie the Bears in Brown’s opener.
Allison Snooks made nine saves on 20 shots for UMaine.
Against Vermont, Kristen Briggs and Liz Grote scored first-half goals as the Catamounts improved to 2-2. Maine fell to 0-3.
Joanne Gosselin scored in the second half on a Briggs assist. K.J. Huyffer and Sara Lesperance combined to make five saves on 12 UMaine shots.
Snooks, Kim Watson and Jennifer Terpolilli collaborated in goal for the Black Bears, making 12 saves on 15 shots.
Bowdoin 1, Bridgewater St. 0
At Brunswick, Moya Gibson made nine saves on 10 shots to earn the shutout as the Polar Bears won the season-opener.
Michelle Comeau scored the game’s only goal of a Liz Iannotti pass 5:35 into the game.
Tracey Ullathorne made 10 saves on 14 shots for Bridgewater State.
UMF 3, St. Joe’s 0
At Farmington, Karen Usher scored two goals to lead the University of Maine-Farmington to their second win against no defeats.
Carol Pike added a goal for UMF. Kristen Overton made 12 saves on 17 shots in earning the shutout.
Karen Rogers made five saves on eight shots for 0-1 St. Joseph’s.
Castleton 3, UMPI 1 (2OT)
At Castleton, Vt., Tina Davis and Michelle Corriveau scored goals 15 seconds apart in the second overtime to propel Castleton State past the University of Maine-Presque Isle on Saturday.
Christine Damato had assists on both goals. Becky Anderson scored the first goal for 2-3 Castleton State. Traci LeBeau made 13 saves on 14 shots.
Lynn Hartley scored an unassisted goal for the 1-2 Owls. Michelle Davis made eight saves on 11 shots.
UMPI 2, Johnson State 1
At Johnson, Vt., Sarah Roy scored both goals as the Owls earned a split on their road trip to the Green Mountain State with Sunday’s win.
Lynn Hartley, Stori Shaw, and Jen Craig had asssists for 2-2 UM-Presque Isle. Michelle Davis made 14 saves on 15 shots.
Sue Tremblay scored on a Kenena Hansen assist for 1-1 Johnson State. Michelle Downer made 11 saves on 13 shots.
Colby 5, Elm’s 0
At Colby, Brook Porteous had an unassisted goal and an assist to help take the Mules to a win Sunday. Kaitlin Graham scored off Porteous’ pass. Kara Merchant and Susan Palmer both had unassisted goals to round out Colby’s scoring. Stacy Joslin and Erika Moore combined for three saves on three shots for the Mules shutout.
Sara Skorupski had 26 saves on 41 shots for her Elm’s College team from Chicopee,Mass.
Men’s Soccer
UMF 4, UMM 0
At Machias, Robin Gronwald had two goals to help lead his 2-0 University of Maine at Farmington team to a win on a Sunday. Peter Grosso scored off a Matt Duffy pass to lend to UM-Farmington’s cause. Matt Duffy had a goal in addition to his assist and Carl Tayler had two assists to round out the scoring for Farmington. Nate Pickens had five saves on five shots for the shut out.
Scott Douglas and Mike Gagnon combined for 13 saves on 17 shots for their 0-1 University of Maine at Machias team.
Husson 2, UMPI 0
At Presque Isle, Guy-Guy Mpeye scored off a Matt Porter pass to help take his 1-0 Husson team to its first victory Sunday. Jamie Collett scored off an Adam Heaslewood to round out Husson’s scoring. Jim Wishart in net for Husson had five saves on nine shots for the shut out.
Jason Pangburn and Dave Claing combined for 10 saves on 13 shots for his Presque Isle team.
UMPI 4, Unity 1
At Presque Isle, Darren Clukey scored all four goals to lead his 4-0 Presque Isle team to a win Saturday. Eric Perry, Jay Moody, Chris Cossette, and Jay Suddy all had assists for Presque Isle. Jason Pangburn and Joey Ouelette combined for six saves on eight shots in the Presque Isle net.
Seth McGraw scored off a Chris Illen pass for his 0-2 Unity College team. Rick Dreves had 18 saves on 29 shots for Unity.
NMTC 6, CMTC 0
At Lewiston, Chris Ferguson had three goals and an assist to help lead Northern Maine Tech to a win. Scott Gendreau had a goal and three assists to help out Northern Maine’s cause. Lee Urtel scored an unassisted goal off a penalty shot and Martin Jerkins scored off a pass from Bub McLeod to round out Northern Maine’s scoring. Steve Thibodeau in net for NMTC had six saves on 11 shots.
