Orono and Veazie residents need to become aware of the true nature of the “recycling center” being proposed for development along Route 2 in Orono. In reality, this will be more like a “rotating dump.” According to the developer, IMR, demolition debris from dozens of towns throughout the area will be trucked to this site, dumped, crushed and trucked out again to final destinations such as PERC and CWS.

Demolition debris includes concrete, glass, wood, furniture, lumber, yard waste, cardboard and tires. IMR expects to process 25,000 tons (50 million pounds) of this material in its first year of operation. This amount of debris would require 2,500 round trips by 10-ton trucks along Route 2, which is already overburdened with traffic.

Do you want 25,000 tons of demolition debris trucked through the center of Orono and Veazie next year? If not, please contact the Orono Town Council and express your opposition to this project. Kathy Carter Orono
