Driver, 3 passengers are injured when van hits house in Caswell

CASWELL — Four people were injured Saturday when the van in which they were riding left Route 1A in Caswell and struck a house.

Injured were Dennis LaBreck, 34, of Caswell, the driver of the van; and Alfred LaBreck and Larry Campbell, also of Caswell, and Danny Boulier, 30, of Biddeford, all passengers in the van.

All four were transported to Cary Medical Center in Caribou by ambulances from Van Buren and Caribou. Dennis LaBreck was admitted to the hospital. A supervisor at the hospital said Sunday that she was not allowed to release information about his condition.

Trooper Tammy Doyle, who investigated the accident, said Sunday that Dennis LaBreck received facial injuries in the accident.

The other three men were transferred to The Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle where, Doyle said, they underwent surgery for their injuries. A supervisor at that hospital said Sunday afternoon that all three men were in stable condition.

Doyle said Alfred LaBreck and Larry Campbell each suffered broken legs in the crash. Danny Boulier received chest injuries, a broken arm and broken thumbs.

Dennis LaBreck and Campbell, who also was riding in the front seat, had to be extricated from the van by rescue workers using the Jaws of Life. Alfred LaBreck and Boulier were sitting on the floor of the back of the van. None of the men was wearing a seat belt, Doyle said.

The van struck the home of Aural Lavoie. No one in the house was hurt, but the two-story house had extensive damage, Doyle said, including to the foundation and to furniture inside.

Doyle said the cause of the accident was “a total mystery.” She said it had been raining and it was possible that LaBreck’s 1979 Chevrolet van might have hydroplaned on the wet pavement. There were no witnesses, she said.

Speed probably was not a factor in the crash, Doyle said, because the van had just left a store four houses away from the accident scene moments before the crash.

The Caribou and Limestone fire departments also responded to the accident.
