The Old Town School Board reversed an earlier decision Tuesday and voted to allow the boys and girls basketball teams to play preseason scrimmages in Caribou and Presque Isle on Dec. 2 and 3. Many of the players turned out Tuesday in an attempt to convince the board to reverse the decision of Oct. 4. Annette Engstrom and Allen Comeau spoke for the group. Chairman Charles Weeks told the players the board had voted against the overnight trip because it perceived “a lack of solid planning,” and it was concerned that no female chaperones were scheduled to travel with the girls team.
The Brewer City Council is expected to continue with its consideration of whether Park Avenue East should be extended through to Grove Street during a Monday night meeting at city hall. Action on the matter was tabled from a previous meeting pending a discussion with developer Robert Bowley on whether a cul-de-sac could be constructed in the area. According to notes from City Manager Reynold Perry, there had been no word from Bowley as of last week about the matter.

The Penobscot County Water Company has filed an application with the Maine Public Utilities Commission for a 56.8 percent rate increase, Lawrence Perkins, district superintendent for General Water Works Inc., owners of the Penobscot County Water Company, said Monday. The rate hike would affect approximately 2,500 residential customers in Orono and Veazie. The cost of water for fire hydrants to those two towns also will increase by about 65 percent if the PUC approves the new proposed rate schedule.
For School Administrative District 22 officials, persistence paid off Monday night. Voters here approved the district’s proposed $550,000 elementary school by a comfortable 464 to 364 margin. Newburgh residents also balloted in favor of the proposal, 37 to 15. As far as district education officials are concerned, the election Monday was a third-round victory. Twice in the past 15 months residents in Hampden and Newburgh kayoed earlier school proposals.

Wednesday’s luncheon gathering at the Bangor House was one of the most memorable in Community Chest history. Tuesday’s gathering had been conventional and perhaps a bit dispirited. Wednesday’s was completely unconventional and alive with enthusiasm and interest. Those at the tables watched, with delighted surprise, the long rows of figures on the blackboard crawl to a total of $44,019 — almost half of what, for cities this size, is an astronomical goal. Forty-four thousand dollars and the campaign was but two and one-half days old. The day’s total was $20,633.
