Blodgett appears ready to become a Black Bear

The University of Maine women’s basketball team on Thursday appeared to be the winner of the Cindy Blodgett sweepstakes.

Blodgett, the highly-touted senior guard for the Lawrence High School girls basketball team, had narrowed her college choices down to Maine, Colorado and Notre Dame, it was reported Wednesday.

She has called a press conference for next Tuesday to announce her decision.

Maine appeared to be the likely choice for the following reasons: Colorado has committed all of its scholarships for next season, and Notre Dame is not expecting any more recruits to sign during this early signing period.

The early-signing period ends Wednesday.

The University of Colorado had four scholarships available for next season, but all were used up by recruits who committed during the early signing period, according to Buffaloes assistant coach Barb Smith. Blodgett was not one of the recruits listed by Smith on Thursday.

However, Blodgett could still sign an NCAA Letter of Intent with the Buffaloes, and Colorado could find room for the 5-foot-9 guard if another player were to give up a scholarship, it was pointed out.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, also had four scholarships available for next season, with three committed to early signers. Blodgett is not among those three players, according to assistant coach John Sullivan. The final scholarship is not expected to be awarded during this early signing period, Sullivan added.

Maine Coach Joanne Palombo is not allowed to comment about a recruit until the player signs an NCAA Letter of Intent.

Blodgett gave a hint as to the kind of pressure she has been under through the intense late-season recruiting process during a brief telephone interview from her home in Clinton.

“I’ll be honest. I don’t want people to invade my privacy,” Blodgett said. “That’s the whole reason for this press conference. If I had my way, I’d sign (the letter) and not say anything.”

Blodgett, who has led the Lawrence High Bulldogs to three consecutive state Class A championships, averaged 32.7 points per game last season. She has scored 1,758 points during her career.

Blodgett, a three-time All-Maine first-team selection, is the most highly recruited girls basketball player since Lisa Blais, who led Westbrook to four straight Class A state titles in the late 1970s.
