FREDERICTON, New Brunswick – Charlie Milan III rolled up a 137.6 average through seven strings to spark the Maine Heat to a strong showing as the Heat cooled off host Hanwell Bowling Centre in the World Team Candlepin Bowling Championship Wednesday.

The Heat handed Hanwell its first loss of the tourney and surged into second place in the second day of competition. The Heat and Hanwell split their three-string match, with each taking four points.

Chip Carson of Bangor also turned in a solid showing for the Maine Heat as he recorded a 435 series.

Hanwell maintained first place in the Moosehead Division with a 44-4 record. The Heat is second at 34-14.

Milan, who has won more than 20 Maine championships, only bowled three strings in Tuesday’s competition, but heated up with seven on Wednesday with a total pinfall of 963.

The tourney features 22 teams from the Maritime provinces and New England states. Each team competes daily in three, three-string matches. The top four teams in each division qualify for Friday’s quarterfinals.

Another Maine team, Lewis Auto Sales of Kenduskeag, enjoyed a strong showing Wednesday as it moved up from eighth to fifth in the Moosehead Division. Ray Dube has sparked Lewis Auto Sales with a 128.2 average.

The New Hampshire All-Stars lead the Fredericton Inn Division with a 38-10 record.
