I am writing to express my dismay over the University of Maine’s consideration of Veterans’ Day. On this day that was set aside to honor the men and women who served, fought and, in many cases, died for the very ideals and freedoms we all cherish, the University of Maine conducted business as usual. I find that appalling.

The veterans of this country have always given us so much and never asked for anything in return. Is it too much to ask that they be remembered for their sacrifices? I say “No!” Everyone who has ever served is a hero in their own right and should be treated accordingly. To me, the university’s not acknowledging of this day is a slap in the face to them.

The University of Maine is an institution of learning. Seeing that, why don’t they try and teach students to respect the ones who made their lives as good as they are? What kind of country do we have if we forget our veterans? As Billy Ray Cyrus says in the song. “Some Gave All”: “Love your country, and live with pride; and don’t forget those who died … ” If we can’t show respect for people who so justly deserve it, who can we show respect for?
