Cates leads Hornets past Panthers

MARS HILL – Senior guard Crystal Cates scored a game-high 24 points and Ashland built a six-point halftime lead before holding off host Central Aroostook in the second half of Tuesday night’s 55-54 schoolgirl basketball victory.

Denise Wentworth added 11 points for the Hornets.

Jen Boyd’s 16 points paced Central Aroostook. Kris Bradstreet had 12.

Tammy LaFerriere, Mary Beth Coughlin, and Amy Vachon had eight points apiece for the winners, while Cindy Blodgett’s game-high 26 points, Jill Atwood’s 12 and Wendy Atwood’s 11 points paced Lawrence.

At Camden, Erin Akins scored four of her team-high 17 points in the second overtime and teammate Erika LeClair added three free throws as the Black Raiders pulled out the victory in the close-fought game.

LeClair finished with 15 points, and Heather Poulin chipped in with 10.

Darrah Roberts led the Windjammers with a game-high 21 points and Amanda Roberts added another 19. Beth Littlefield added 10.
