City Hall to add relic to furnishings

Bangor officials will soon have another relic from the old City Hall building to grace its current location.

A mantel that was over a fireplace in the mayor’s office at the Columbia Street City Hall — a victim to Urban Renewal a quarter-century ago — has been donated by private residents.

After City Hall was demolished, the couple had the mantel in their home, which was destroyed by fire. When they rebuilt, they decided to donate the heavy oak piece to the city.

The city spent $675 refurbishing the century-old mantel, and plans call for it to be put in the council chambers after the mirror is replaced. When in place, it will join the bell from the old City Hall tower, now on the lawn in front of the new City Hall, and a bust of Gen. Samuel Hersey, which is in the lobby.
