Swift to be inducted in H of F

PORTLAND – Bill Swift, who posted a 21-8 record with the San Francisco Giants last season, will be inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame on Jan. 15 at the Italian Heritage Center here.

Swift, a South Portland native and former University of Maine star, will be only the third Maine athlete to be inducted into the hall while still active. The other two were Joan Benoit Samuelson, who won the Olympic marathon in 1984; and Joey Gamache, who won the World Boxing Association lightweight championship in ’92.

Swift enjoyed his best season ever in the majors as he placed second in the voting for the Cy Young Award. Greg Maddux of the Atlanta Braves won the award.

Two other Maine athletes will also be honored at the hall ceremony. Anna Parisien and Mike Bordick will each receive the President’s Award. Parisien recently won the North American Series giant slalom and Bordick is the starting shortstop for the Oakland Athletics.

Dick MacPherson, former head coach of the New England Patriots and an Old Town native, will be the guest speaker at the banquet.

Tickets to the banquet are $15 each. Those seeking more information may contact Dan Gacetta at 799-4555 or Sonny Noel at 799-4742.
