PRESQUE ISLE — Coordinators of a new program titled CanSurmount are seeking volunteers in the Presque Isle area.

The program, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, will benefit newly diagnosed patients with cancer and their families. A day-long training session to certify volunteers will be held Saturday, Feb. 5, at Gould Memorial Hospital’s conference room.

Volunteers are individuals who have or have had cancer and successfully adjusted, said Elaine Gershman, program chairman.

The volunteers contact patients by referral in the hospital and at home. Hospital visits are made only with notification to the attending physician. Home visits or telephone calls may be requested by anyone. Volunteers also provide emotional support for people with cancer, said Gershman.

Volunteer qualifications are available by contacting Gershman at 764-7959, or Eleanor Reese, volunteer director for The Aroostook Medical Center, at 768-4032.
