After four minutes of action Monday night, the John Bapst girls basketball team was colder than the ice storm brewing outside the Bangor Auditorium and found itself tied 4-4 with winless Belfast
But for the next 20 minutes, the Crusaders put on an exhibition of pressure defense, forcing 27 turnovers and outscoring the Lions 58-14 en route to a 68-29 victory.
Meanwhile, the Crusaders were taking care of the ball, committing only three turnovers and shooting 59 percent in the first half.
Two platoons of Bapst players combined to press to a 20-0 run to finish the second period and begin the third. Eight different players scored during the run that was capped by a Rena Lolar three-pointer from the right wing that gave the Crusaders a 58-16 lead with 1:10 left in the third.
John Bapst shot 51 percent from the floor on the night, making 30 of 58 attempts, and limited the Lions to 23 percent shooting, 8-for-35. John Bapst scored 20 field goals on layups.
Junior center Becky Goggins led the Crusaders with 12 points on six-for-seven shooting in limited action. The 6-foot-1 Goggins also blocked four shots.
Sophomore Shannon Webster came off the bench to score 10 points for John Bapst, now 3-5.
The Lions, 0-10, were paced by freshman forward Darcy Brown, who made seven of eight free throw attempts and scored 11 points.
