WATERVILLE – The Colby College White Mules set a school record for most points in a game with a 134-84 thumping of Western New England College during men’s basketball action Saturday.

Junior point guard Matt Gaudet paced Colby with 20 points, 18 in the first half. Glen McCrum chipped in with 17 points.

At South Lancaster, Mass., Magnus Erickson’s two free throws with 6.8 seconds remaining sealed UMPI’s win over Atlantic-Union.

Chris Casavant had a game-high 24 points for the winners, including 16 in the second half; Ernie Kavanaugh had 16, Glenn Sharp scored 11 points and Kirk Lurvey had 10. Todd Larlee contributed six assists and four steals.

UM-Machias sweeps two

At Machias, UMM racked up its 12th and 13th wins by upending UM-Fort Kent 87-78 on Sunday after toppling UM-Presque Isle 71-63 on Saturday.

On Sunday, freshman guard Barry Shramban scored 15 of his 25 points in the second half as UMM rallied from a three-point halftime deficit to pull out the win. UMM outscored UM-Fort Kent 17-9 from the free throw line in the second half.

Ralph Hirtle had 14 points for the winners and P.J. Bristol had 11 points and 15 rebounds. J.R. Chatman pulled down eight boards to go with his six points. Bill Tanguay had nine points and four assists and Antoine Morin contributed eight points and four assists.

Chris Sutton had a game-high 26 points for UMFK. Elton Jones had 21 points, Lorne Guy scored 13 and Bruce McPherson finished with nine points.

It was the third and final meeting of the two teams with UMM winning the last two.

On Saturday, Chatman led a balanced attack with 13 points and UMM converted on 12 of its 13 second-half free throws to sew up the win.

Bristol had 12 points, Morin scored 11 and Shramban had nine points, seven rebounds and seven assists.

Chris Casavant’s 19 points, Ernie Kavanaugh’s 11 and Todd Larlee’s nine paced UMPI.

UMPI women take a pair

At Lyndonville, Vt., sophomore point guard Heather Brewer’s foul shot with 40 seconds left broke a 60-60 tie and she added a six-foot jump shot 10 seconds later, her only three points of the game, to give UMPI a win over Lyndon State and a sweep of their two-game trip.

UMPI had upended UMM on Saturday, 81-53.

Michelle Davis had a game-high 19 points for UMPI and she also grabbed 10 rebounds. Jen McDonald contributed 14 points and 10 rebounds and Audra Karnes scored 11 points.

Jen Warren’s 12 points and Michelle Hemond’s 10 paced Lyndon State.

On Saturday, Davis scored 17 points; McDonald scored 15 and hauled down 10 rebounds and Tamera Blades contributed 14 points and 17 rebounds.

Brewer dished out six assists.

Heather Reynolds’ 19 points and Arlene Wright’s 16 led UMM.
