People magazine is examining photos of Gov. John R. McKernan to determine if he is handsome enough to belong in a special beauty issue being planned for May.
A representative of People called the Bangor Daily News Monday morning to obtain photos of McKernan. Photocopies of six black and white photos were faxed to the magazine later in the day.
“We’re looking at lots and lots of people for a beauty issue,” said Evie McKenna, who called the NEWS library for the shots. “Rumor has it that he’s a good looking guy.”
She said the magazine’s editors were looking for other than Hollywood stars to put in the issue. She cautioned, however, that the issue was in very preliminary stages and that only 50 faces would be selected.
“Sometimes photos are looked at and dismissed in seconds,” said McKenna. She couldn’t say when a decision would be made on McKernan.
Cory Tilley, McKernan’s press secretary, said his office had not been contacted by People and that he was not aware the governor was being considered for any beauty issue.
