It couldn’t have been more appropriate.
He pulled up beyond the 3-point line to the right of the key, squared up, and let the basketball fly.
The ball swished through the hoop and Husson College senior guard Raymond Alley’s 3-pointer made him the school’s leading all-time scorer.
Alley finished with 27 points to lead the Braves to a 100-78 win over Thomas College at the Newman Gym in Bangor Monday evening.
“I really wasn’t thinking about the points,” said the 22-year-old Alley, who now has 2,481 career points, 10 more than the previous mark set by Dana Wilson 20 years ago. “It doesn’t seem like a big deal. My main focus is winning the districts. Dana Wilson was a great player. He scored his points without a 3-point line. What he did was astonishing.
“I’m glad to have it over with,” added Alley. “We were obviously out of sync and I was forcing my shots early. Once I got the record, we got untracked and played the way we can play.”
The Terriers gave the Braves all they wanted over the first 24 minutes, playing smart, disciplined basketball to stay within four of the Braves at 50-46.
But Alley and the Braves broke the game open by scoring 13 unanswered points en route to a 32-10 flurry that sewed up Husson’s 22nd win in 25 games. Thomas is now 8-14.
Alley hit three 3-pointers during the 13-point run, including his record-breaker, and Rich Mazurek and Kevin Moore added short jumpers.
Alley had four assists and three steals, Moore added 21 points and nine rebounds, Mazurek added 19 points, Rick Sinclair scored 10 points off the bench, and Bryan Jefferson had seven assists and four steals.
Senior forward Matt Gillespie eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for the Terriers with his 25 points. He now has 1,014. Mike Adams also tossed in 25 points and added a game-high 12 rebounds and five assists. Chris Pearce scored 13 points.
