AUGUSTA — A 25-year-old Augusta man died of smoke inhalation in a car that caught fire while it was parked in a church lot. Authorities on Sunday said the fire was accidental.
The victim, Brian Wallace, apparently was asleep in the rear seat of his car when a fire broke out in the engine compartment around midnight Saturday, said spokesman Stephen McCausland of the state Public Safety Department. The exact cause was not known.
Wallace was identified through fingerprints.
His 1986 sedan was parked in a church parking lot when an employee of the nearby Kennebec County Jail saw flames and reported the fire.
It was the fifth fire death this year in Maine. Two of the other deaths were also in Augusta. Two people were killed in a fire in Hermon, said McCausland.
