In the final analysis, our judicial system is still about power and the use or abuse of that power. The power that Judge Donald Alexander exercises over women who are pregnant seems inordinate (BDN, Feb. 21).
I believe the example he wants to set for society is a condemnation of Kristina McCarron’s crime of bringing a child out of wedlock into this world, not the destruction of property for which she was arrested. She received a four-year sentence while one of her male accomplices served four days and the other three months. In another case, he handed down a 10-year sentence to a pregnant mother, although nine months had been recommended by the prosecution. We continue to blame women solely for a pregnancy that is always bilateral.
We as a people have power too, power is in our voices and numbers. It is too late to affect past decisions of Judge Alexander, but far from too late to ask for justice from Gov. McKernan. I urge citizens to write him at the Blaine House asking for a review of the sentencing for Kristina McCarron.
Finally, I can only wonder how much time Kenneth Allen would have received (nine months to three years was recommended, 25 days received from Judge Alexander) had he been pregnant at the time of his sentencing! Harper Dean East Machias
